Students Don’t Need New Year’s Resolutions
They Need New Year’s Systems
Entrepreneurship Education is more than teaching students how to run a business effectively - it is about teaching them how to run their lives effectively. And this means an intensive focus on habits. Habits make up the system that delivers the results, and without a system that is fine-tuned to the results we desire, we end up, like most other people, with an unused gym membership in early February.
But New Year’s is a great time to teach our students about the transformative power of daily habits. In our entrepreneurship programming, we focus first on the desired result or change that we want to see, and then backtrack to the behavior that drives those results, and then backtrack even further to the beliefs that are driving that behavior.
This often uncovers limiting beliefs that must be eradicated (such as “I’ll never have enough money to–” or “I’ll never be smart enough to–” or “I’ll never find someone who–”). Once we have eradicated these limiting beliefs, we can focus on the necessary behaviors that will drive the results we want–and this leads to the system of daily habits.
Rather than have my entrepreneurship students share New Year’s Resolutions (which everyone jokingly knows will not last), I encourage them to create a personal growth plan that will help ensure that 2025 will be the best year of their lives. In fact, creating a personal growth plan is the first project in the entire entrepreneurship program and a requirement for any students seeking the certificate of entrepreneurship.
After all, how can we effectively start and operate a business if we can’t effectively operate our lives?
Standing out as a Christian school while staying true to your values is more challenging than ever. At Seed Tree Group, we help schools implement a proven entrepreneurship program that empowers students to take ownership of their education, equipping them with life-ready skills and creating a distinguished school with engaged students, inspired parents, and energized donors.
